Who are we

Nomadic Journeys is a fully licensed Mongolian company, but it is also a concept and a way of travel that have been created by Jan Wigsten and R. Enkhtaivan. We used to work together on tourism trips already during the time of tourism monopoly in Mongolia. Enkhtaivan have brought together a strong Mongolian network into the company operations, and likewise have Jan connected Nomadic Journeys to his international network.

 

S. MANDUHAI, the director of Nomadic Journeys, controls all tour operations and logistics from our office, located in downtown Ulaanbaatar. She's a graduate of Moscow University.

JAN WIGSTEN is Swedish and our main contact abroad. He works from the office of Eco Tour Production Ltd. in Sweden and migrates out to Mongolia every summer, when operations are in full swing. Jan have worked in long haul travel since 1978, and came to out to Mongolia the first time as a tour leader way back in 1980. Jan have since been a regular professional visitor to Mongolia and he have also managed expeditions throughout the Andes, the Amazon, the Himalayas and the three Guianas. In the winter period he is engaged in ecotourism advisory provision lending himself to communities, the Sami reindeer people of Sweden and other international funding agencies. He is an advisory board member of The International Ecotourism Society. www.ecotourism.org

ODMANDAKH is Operations Manager for all our group tours, and you will meet her in our busy office in downtown Ulaanbaatar. Her name means Starshine, and nick name is Manda. Manda comes from the Erdenet area of northern Mongolia, and has been with Nomadic Journeys since 2003. Apart from running the operations out of our Ulaanbaatar office, during our off season she has been English teacher as well as doing trips to meet with our network of European agents. 

BATBADRAKH and BATTSENGEL are the adult sons of one of the most famous horsetrainers of Mongolia. They are both born and bred in the Mongolian equestrian tradition, the same that brought the Huns and Gengis Khan´s troops all the way to Europe. Badrakh has been to Japan several times, to help train race horses there. They organize some of our Horse Trail Journeys with their own horses and by doing so, it benefits their continued involvement in Mongolian horse racing. They also organize our camel treks with camels, people and horses from their family. In our camel trek area they are related to a third of all people living there.

MARK JOHNSTAD, is a native of Montana (USA).  Mark came out to Mongolia in the early 90s as an ecotouris expert doing work for the Mongolia Biodiversity project of UNDP and GEF (Global Environmental Facility). Mark have travelled to the most remote corners of Mongolia. Currently he continue the same work, lately in Botswana. But he have also done this in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Mark help us every summer leading a few of the specialty natural history trips that really explores the best Mongolia can offer.

ERDENEBAT, was born in Övörhangai province. His command of English and contemporary Mongolian affairs is excellent, having a background working at the weekly English language newspaper, UB Post. Erdenebat have succesfully been leading our Mongol Horse Trails trips, and wherever horse riding is involved.

ODONTUYA, born and raised in the Dundgobi province and nowadays a English language teacher at the Mongolian Technical University in Ulaanbaatar. During the summer holidays - June through August - she lead treks and expeditions with us.

R. ENKHBOLD is manager of most logistics and a permanent staff of our company. Enkhbold organize our jeep trips, and very often himself leads the driver team.

TULGA is a our main herdsman trailfinder in Terelj National Park and Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and he have been with us since 1993. He is brought up in the area, and divides his time between our trips, collecting of forest produce and maintaining his livestock. As do ERDENEBAYAR working along with him as a trailfinder and yak herdsman. Erdenebayar and Tulga will also hire other locals as support for our yak treks.
