Red Rock Wilderness Camp
Ikh Nart Nature Reserve is located in East Gobi (Dornogobi), 40km off the TransMongolian Railway to/from China. It consists of amazing landscapes, mostly granite rock formations, but also semi-arid steppes, small veral pools, water springs with small stands of elms and poplars. Ikh Nart is one of the best Gobi wildlife areas, why research is on-going here since 1997 in partnership between Denver Zoo Foundation and Mongolian Academy of Sciences and its Argali Research Center. Argali sheep (Ovis ammon; around 1000) is the world’s largest wild sheep with impressive horns. There are also Siberian Ibex (Capra sibirica) but they are less numerous. A fair sized population of Cinereous Vultures is also there which is the largest of Asian vultures, comparable to the more well-known Andean condor.
Since 2009 Nomadic Journeys operates a luxury wilderness ger camp at Ikh Nart. Hiking is excellent and rewarding, with easy climbs on to the rocks, overlooking the amazing landscape. Mountain bikes, horses and camels are available for ride. The cool evening sunsets over Gobi are pleasant and rewarding.
Your travel choice for Ikh Nartiin Chuluu will assist the conservation efforts in the area, as it bring finances to the local economy and protection efforts.
Daily trains operates out from Ulaanbaatar on the TransMongolian Railway line in the direction of Beijing and Hökh Hot in China. The local stations Shiveegobi, Ölziyt, Tsomoog and Airag are all being used as transit points for Red Rock Ger Camp. You may also arrive on trains from China, and our camp vehicle can pick you up. For the returns, only overnight trains are available. There is always an option to drive to/from Ulaanbaatar, which is faster.
There is also a designated airstrip for small bushplane Cessna Caravan, which may be chartered for 8-9 passengers at the time. The most common for such charter flights is to fly to/from our other ger camp at Jalman Meadows on Upper Tuul River. Which is one hour away by such flight. The airstrip is invisible, and we will just set up landing flags on the airfield, on the day of landing. It is located 1500 meters from camp.
The ger camp is seasonal in the summers, and is fully collapsible. It may be relocated leaving no more impact on the area than a herdsmen family would. It has 14 double occupancy gers and triples May be accommodated in these. There are also 2 family size gers, with a double bed and two beds. The gers have fire stoves, wooden floors and are beautifully decorated in traditional nomadic style with hand-crafted furnishings. Showers are provided in two separate gers. The shower ger has a fire stove, why it is warm and cozy. The toilets are long drop style allowing for natural decomposition. It is five-star camping at its best.
We often hear from our guests how excellent they think the food is at the camp. Every morning the cooks prepare a festive breakfast buffet for you. The lunch and dinner consist of 2-3 course set meals. In the restaurant ger you will find a good selection of wines. Tea and coffee are available all day long. Accommodation at Red Rock is full board (if nothing else is agreed). Meals are served in the restaurant ger three times per day. The cold drinks are according to the price list. The meal plan for a night stay at Red Rock includes lunch and dinner on arrival day, breakfast the next morning. If you wish lunch or dinner on the departure day, pls just pay the additional cost as per the price list. Our camp staff will notify you of meal times in due time.
