Nomadic Journeys established Mongolia River Outfitters (MRO) to offer travelers the opportunity to experience one of the world’s finest wilderness fly fishing adventures. These exclusive expeditions take place on a remote river system — one of the last truly healthy strongholds for the mighty taimen, the largest member of the salmonid family.

Taimen once ranged from the Pacific to the Balkans, but today survive only in a few isolated regions. Our operation is located in one of these rare places, deep in the wilderness river system, and exists not only to provide unforgettable angling experiences, but also to protect this critical habitat.

This river system teems with life. The abundance of large, aggressive Mongolian trout provides a rich food source for taimen and world-class dry-fly fishing. As one of our Montana-based guides describes it:

“You float down this crystal-clear stream surrounded by stunning scenery, eating great food and facing this wonderful ‘sheep or wolf’ dilemma — do I drift a hopper to the twenty-inch trout under the bank, or skate a mouse to the fifty-inch taimen prowling the eddy line? It’s an amazing predicament!”

MRO’s “no shuttle” journeys are unique in Mongolia. Anglers explore a different stretch of water each day without the need for time-consuming vehicle transfers. Every morning, you float directly from camp, and each evening you drift into a new streamside campsite — where the fire is lit, drinks are served, and your luggage is waiting.

We operate on over 200 kilometers of river, ensuring fresh water and new fishing experiences throughout the season. Our comfortable camps, professional guides, experienced cooks, and U.S.-made non-motorized boats are all designed for the ideal drift-and-wade experience.

These adventures are strictly catch-and-release, fly fishing only, using single barbless hooks. But MRO’s conservation efforts extend far beyond that. We help develop and enforce river-wide catch-and-release policies, work closely with local communities to link economic opportunity to ecosystem health, support wildlife law enforcement, and offer a practical model for sustainable conservation tourism.

Fishing trips run from mid-June to mid-October and typically book a year in advance.
