Jalman Meadows Wilderness Ger Camp

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park & Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area

Introduction

Just a three-hour drive northeast of Ulaanbaatar lies Jalman Meadows, a remote summer pasture bursting with wildflowers. Located on the edge of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and bordering the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, this is true wilderness, stretching to the Russian-Siberian frontier. The landscape marks the transition from open steppe to Siberian boreal forest, with larch and birch woodlands, river meadows, and steppe valleys. Wildlife includes wolves, lynx, brown bears, red deer, moose, and wild boar—though sightings are rare in summer. Activities include hiking, horseback riding, rafting, kayaking, or relaxing in a riverside ger sauna. While southern Gorkhi-Terelj sees conventional tourism, Nomadic Journeys’ low-impact ger camp remains completely isolated beside the Tuul River.

Itinerary

Day 1: To Jalman Meadows

We drive northeast through steppe valleys dotted with gers and livestock, crossing the Zamtiin Pass into the Upper Tuul River Valley, a traditional winter pasture where few families stay in summer—allowing edelweiss and other wildflowers to flourish. On arrival, yak carts meet us to carry luggage, and we settle into comfortable gers.

Days 2–3: Khan Khentii

Explore at your own pace—on foot, on horseback, or by river using catarafts or inflatable kayaks. The area features forests, steppe valleys, and meandering rivers, with vast solitude and scenic beauty. The Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, established in 1993, preserves much of Mongolia’s wilderness. The southern region is lightly inhabited by herders, while the north remains untouched. Enjoy a refreshing swim, ride mountain bikes, relax in a ger sauna, or unwind in the library ger.

Day 4: Return to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, we return to Ulaanbaatar. See the capital city on your own. Distances in the city are short, and most points of interest are walkable

Low-Impact Ger Camp

Nomadic Journeys is committed to sustainable tourism, creating local jobs rooted in traditional livelihoods. These include the use of yak carts, packhorses, riding horses, and other herder services. The camp also purchases milk and dairy products from nearby herding families. Jalman Meadows Ger Camp accommodates up to 30 guests in double-occupancy gers. Vehicles are parked a short walk away, maintaining the peaceful natural setting. Fully collapsible and it is designed to leave minimal environmental impact.  The camp uses EcoLoo composting toilets, using a special blend of natural bacteria to break down waste, and shower gers where water is heated on wood-burning stoves. Electricity for the kitchen and refrigerator is generated by solar panels. All waste is separated and managed responsibly. The camp’s footprint is no greater than that of a traditional herding family—making it a true model of low-impact travel.

What our guests say

We appreciate your feedback about our tours and services.

  • Living the mongolian way

Great place to stay and experience mongolian way of living, no tv, wifi, phone. Just nature and great company of the staff and livestocks of mongolia. The toilet is a hole in the ground covered by a shed. It is clean, but can be smelly to those used to city life. Not hot water supply, inform the staff that you like to hot water half an hour earlier so that they can boil it over camel dung 🙂

  • Beautiful location, fantastic service - best ger camp

This camp is totally secluded - which is amazing if you're looking for no cell service or power points (though they have power points in the library). The scenery is stunning, the gers are outfitted beautifully - having things like a sink (which actually has water), curtains, comfy outdoor chairs and proper duvets/pillows is the height of ger camping luxury. The food is quite good and they are very accommodating of vegetarians (if you tell them in advance). The staff were helpful and willing to organize things like a bonfire for us - but there was no set time, it just happened at some point.
